THE FALCON TOWER

Falcon Tower seen from the Persian Garden

Toğan Qulesi is a high construction towering over the palace roofs. Only the minarets of the Big Khan Mosque are higher than that significant building.

Its name is translated as the Falcon Tower : supposedly it was a place where khans’ falcons were kept. Such explanation is rather trustworthy: falconry was much popular in the Crimean Khanate and the khans themselves much enjoyed to spend their leisure time with that kind of hunting. Rare breeds of falcons frequently appear in the lists of precious gifts to the Crimean khans from Poland and Muscovy; white Arctic gyrfalcons were the most valued. Tame falcons were kept in spacious premises (sometimes the floor was filled with water to tame a bird to fly down to a hand of its master). The Falcon Tower was a suitable place for such purpose: the construction is empty inside; just a wooden ladder conducts to the top platform (from which, by the way, a magnificent view on the town and the Palace opens).

The tower is placed in a corner of the Persian Court – a kind of garden park filled formerly with trees, fountains, bathes, arbours. This quiet part of the Palace surrounded with a high wall was a nice place for walks of the Crimean rulers. Much possible that the khans walked there accompanied by their families (there is a door in the wall joining the Persian Garden and the Harem).

After recent repair of the Falcon Tower visitors of the Palace have a rare opportunity to look at the Palace surroundings almost from the height of falcon's flight.
